在下述两种情形，所有格是单独存在的，没有名词尾随其后，这就叫做独立所有格。

（1）所有格后面的名词因重复而被省略：

This doll is my daughter's （doll）. 这个洋娃娃是我女儿的（洋娃娃）。

Paul's (family) is a large family. 保罗的（家庭）是个大家庭。

（2）被所有格修饰的名词为 house, shop, church, store, palace, home, hospital, college, theater, cathedral, hotel, restaurant, office 等建筑物时，这个名词可省略。

I bought this book at the bookseller's (store) on the coner.

我在街角的那家书店买了这本书。

I saw him at my uncle's (house). 我在我叔叔家见到了他。

I have a toothache, and have to go to the dentist's (office) every other

day.

我牙痛，必须每隔一天到牙医那里去。

I met an old friend at the barber's (shop) this morning.

今天早上我在理发店遇到了一位老朋友。

St. Paul's (Cathedral) 圣保罗大教堂

St. John's (College) 圣约翰大学

St. James's (Theater) 圣詹姆斯剧院

St. Peter's (Church) 圣彼得教堂

【注1】下句中的 house 就不能省掉：（因省略会引起误解）

My uncle's house stands on a hill. 我叔叔家是在山丘上。

【注2】 因 /sts/ 发音困难，口语有时用 go to the dentist 代替 go to the dentist's 。美语有时也省去 ('s)：

I am going to the dentist('s) tomorrow. 我明天会去看牙医。
